Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and Kirikkale Üniversitesi held a Public Lecture with Necmeddin Bilal Erdogan, Prof. Dr. Ersan Aslan, Mecit Çetinkaya at the AR Fachruddin B Building on Monday (19/12). Before the public lecture begins, UMY also held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony with Kirikkale Üniversitesi and Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam.

The Rector of UMY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto M.P., IPM., opened the agenda by delivering a speech to welcome the delegates from Kirikkale University and Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation. “It is an honor for us to welcome you to the university and have an interesting discussion about Islam and science. We strive to integrate Islamic values into the university’s everyday activities including research and education. Because of its long history during the golden age, Turkiye has always been an excellent reference in studying the integration of Islam and science. We look forward to working together on the agreement we will sign today.”

Furthermore, Necmeddin Bilal Erdogan, member of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation expressed his thought on the importance of studying the history of Science in Islam. “Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin has dedicated his life to studying the history of Islamic science. he wants to highlight the advancements in science and technology that occurred between the eighth and eighteenth centuries. While the West remains in the dark ages, the Muslim world is advancing in science and technology. Dr. Fuat Sezgin, his museum in Frankfurt, as well as his institute in Istanbul, strives to spread knowledge to the world. Science is the legacy of all humankind.”

As UMY has a similar vision with Kirikkale Üniversitesi and Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation, the collaboration will be beneficial to all parties. Other than that, UMY will also contribute more to the Islamic science world.

Mecit Çetinkaya as the President of the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation explains the goal of the foundation as well as looking forward to cooperation with UMY. “Our Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin foundation’s major goal is to make Istanbul a center of science, which is why he also established an institute at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Waqf University. Our foundation provided scholarships to students at this university at all stages of study, including undergraduate and graduate studies. All of this effort was made possible by the president’s valued assistance. Our president always tried his hardest to attain the goals. We really hope that our collaboration and partnership with UMY will continue.”
