In a democratic country, holding an election is one of the requirements for electing a president or parliament. Indonesia holds elections every five years. General Election Commission of The Republic of Indonesia (KPU RI), which is in charge of organizing elections, is also responsible for ensuring a legitimate and fair election.

On Friday (19/8) at the Royal Ambarukmo Hotel Yogyakarta, UMY and KPU RI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and is prepared to cooperate on election-related issues.

Hasyim Asy’ari, Chairman of the KPU RI, said that although KPU is viewed as independent based on the constitution, still it cannot work well on its own. Thus, cooperation with other parties is crucial in a democratic country, especially when it comes to election.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sukamta, S.T., M.T., IPM, Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs expressed his excitement at the universities participating in future activities of KPU. Sukamta stated that UMY and KPU have worked together on several occasions before, such as visiting KPU DIY, holding a workshop or training, and other activities related to elections.

The MoU signing on collaboration between the KPU and UMY is anticipated to have significant benefits for both parties in the future, particularly for elections and improved democracy.
