UMY Inaugurates Global Summer School and Seminar, Advocates for Inclusive Education and Digital Empowerment

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — On July 1, 2024, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) launched its Summer School and International Seminar with a formal ceremony at the AR B Building under the theme  “Empowering Global Communities through Inclusive Education and Digital Advocacy,”. The event, a milestone for the university, was formally open by Prof. Faris Al-Fadhat, Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Alumni, and AIK at UMY. 

On his opening remarks, Prof. Faris extended a warm welcome to the students participating in the 2024 Summer School program, which spans 15 diverse disciplines, including Engineering, Business, Social and Political Sciences, Health, and Agriculture. This year’s program has attracted nearly 150 participants from 20 countries, a testament to its growing international appeal. On this opening ceremony, he also give a speech as the keynote speakers along with Prof. Dr. Melvin A. Jabar, a distinguished Senior Lecturer from De La Salle University, Philippines. 

In his speech, Prof. Faris underscored the importance of inclusive education and the vital role of collaboration in enhancing educational quality, economic development, and socio-cultural growth. He highlighted UMY’s ongoing partnerships with the Indonesian government to elevate national educational standards and its collaborations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to foster university connections, particularly with institutions in Palestine. UMY’s commitment includes offering scholarships to Palestinian students pursuing higher education in Indonesia.

Prof. Faris also said that this agenda aims to elevate educational standards but also to cultivate future leaders. “The UMY Summer School 2024 program aims not only to elevate educational standards but also to cultivate future leaders,” Prof. Faris stated.

Meanwhile Prof. Faris focused on inclusive education, Prof. Dr. Melvin A. Jabar highlighted the transformative potential of digital advocacy in empowering global communities, emphasizing the need for diversity, inclusion, and cross-cultural understanding. He discussed initiatives to create inclusive educational environments that respect diverse perspectives and drive positive change through social media and digital advocacy. These efforts aim to amplify marginalized voices, raise awareness of social justice issues, and mobilize communities for collective action. The program is committed to educational excellence and professional development, equipping individuals with the skills to address global challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.

Prof. Faris emphasized the program’s dedication to fostering learning, cultural exchange, and mutual engagement among students. Prof. Faris expressed his hope that the Summer School would successfully serve all participants and facilitate meaningful interactions, thereby enriching the overall educational experience.
