UMY’s 9th International Cultural and Culinary Festival Celebrates Vibrant Diversity

The annual international festival is back again for the 9th time on April 25 at Sportorium UMY. The International Cultural and Culinary Festival, also known as “ICCF” is a part of Milad UMY, to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Under the tagline “Taste the World, Embrace the Differences”, ICCF was attended by more than 30 countries with over hundreds participants from all over the world. As the event was also open to the public, the 9th ICCF was able to provide approximately 3000 servings to numerous people from all over Yogyakarta.

In his opening remarks, the Rector of UMY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng., highlighted the importance of unity in diversity, “ICCF is hoped to bring unity and mutual respect to differences through cultures and cuisine.” Furthermore, Gunawan appreciates the enthusiasm shown by UMY’s international students in their active involvement in the first Indonesian Speech Competition as part of the 9th ICCF. 

In accordance with the event’s title, participants not only shared their traditional cuisine but also exhibited their cultural heritage through dance, song, and recitation of poetry. The visitors’ enthusiasm was shown in the vibrant atmosphere and resounding applause that accompanied the international traditional performance. 

In addition, UMY conducted a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding with the Provincial Police of Yogyakarta, focusing on the three fundamental principles of higher education. At the signing ceremony, Kombes Pol Emi Sumijati, S.H., who represented the Provincial Police of Yogyakarta, expressed her optimism for future collaboration. 

Shown through the tagline of this year’s ICCF it is hoped that the event will serve as an opportunity to acquire knowledge about other cultures and cuisines from many countries, while also celebrating and embracing diversity.
