In raising the awareness of creating a friendlier place for the environment and building a healthier lifestyle, various forums were conducted in hopes of providing new ideas and innovations. One example is the annual event hosted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education titled the Global Youth Trends Forum. This year’s forum addressed Net-Zero Green Lifestyle challenges under the topic “Transition to a Net-Zero Green Lifestyle: Act Now.”

From November 9 – 12, around 350 participants from 33 countries, including Indonesia, gathered together in Taipei, Taiwan, to discuss and develop solutions regarding the transformation of our daily lives to a Net-Zero Green Lifestyle.

Three delegates from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, along with delegates from Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan, Universitas Muhammadiyah Pekajangan Pekalongan, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, represented Indonesia at the Global Youth Trends Forum 2023 in Taiwan.

The four-day event includes a variety of activities such as cultural trips, international seminars, and discussions regarding attempts to achieve a Net-Zero Green Lifestyle. There were three main agendas: a Keynote Forum, a World Café, and an Interactive Session with professionals from the industry.

The first day featured a keynote forum with numerous professionals presenting their own experiences and challenges in achieving the Net-Zero Lifestyle. Wen-Chen Shih (Deputy Minister of Environment), Beniamin Strzelecki (Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change), Sonam Wangchuk (Founder of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh), and Hemavathi S. Shekhar (YOUNGO Global South Focal Point) are among those honored.

The keynote speakers shared their experiences in achieving a sustainable environment by starting with daily life, which could eventually lead to a larger transformation. Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment presented Taiwan’s government’s policies and contributions to attaining a more eco-friendly environment.

Following the keynote forum, a World Café session was organized to allow participants to exchange ideas and solutions. Green lifestyle (green dining, fashion, and eco-friendly environs), low-carbon products (low-carbon transportation, housing, and eco-friendly products), and nature-based solutions are all the main focuses of the discussion during the session.

On the final day of the event, industry representatives Sherman Hsieh (Chief Sustainability Officer of O’right), Dr. Chen Fu Yang (Founder of 5% Design Action), Hui-Ping Phoebe Chen, Ph.D. (Co-Founder of SunnyFounder and President of TGECA), and Chelsea Chang (Founder of No-Meat Market) shared and exchanged ideas on how they maintain their businesses while also preserving the environment. In addition to that, they also discussed their experiences in developing a more environmentally friendly business.

The Global Youth Trends Forum 2023 is expected to deliver new knowledge and changes to both participants and the environment. The Indonesian delegates are anticipated as well to gain expertise and effectively use it in Indonesia and their particular institutions.
