Yogyakarta – The International Program of Government Affairs and Administration (IGOV) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), in collaboration with the Department of Government Studies, Department of Sharia Economics, Master’s Program in Government Studies, and Doctoral Program in Government Studies at UMY, successfully held a Visiting Lecture event at the Postgraduate Amphitheater Building, UMY. Under the theme “Bioeconomy and the European Union Green Policy Framework,” the event featured Associate Professor Dr. Moritz Albrecht from the University of Eastern Finland as the keynote speaker. The event was opened by IGOV Director Rijal Ramdani, S.IP., MPA., Ph.D., who expressed his hope that this topic would inspire students to explore bioeconomy further in their research or academic writing. “The bioeconomy topic is highly relevant to the current global environmental challenges. We hope that students will be motivated to delve into this field in their academic work,” he stated.

During his lecture, Dr. Moritz Albrecht provided students from UMY’s International Relations, Government Studies, and Sharia Economics programs with in-depth insights into the European Green Deal and Economy Framework, the European Union’s bioeconomy policy framework, and the impact of these policies on global climate change. Albrecht explained that European Union countries are committed to achieving carbon neutrality, where human-generated carbon emissions are absorbed or offset to prevent them from reaching the atmosphere. “This framework has proven successful in the European Union and has significantly contributed to reducing global warming,” he emphasized. Albrecht also highlighted the EU’s ongoing shift to cleaner, renewable energy as a concrete step toward combating climate change.

After the lecture, Dr. Albrecht shared his impressions of Indonesia in an interview with the UMY team. “I truly enjoy my time in Indonesia. The warm welcome and hospitality in Yogyakarta make me feel at home. UMY students are highly engaged and enthusiastic in asking questions, which has been an exceptional experience,” he said enthusiastically. Dr. Albrecht also mentioned that he would be delivering more lectures and seminars while in Indonesia. Currently, he is conducting research on Indonesia’s bioeconomy, focusing on the utilization of seaweed in Gunung Kidul. In the future, he plans to further investigate seaweed policies and explore potential cooperation between Indonesia and the European Union in this field. Through this Visiting Lecture, UMY aims to provide students with new insights into the role of bioeconomy policies in addressing global climate challenges and to encourage students to develop their research potential in this field.
