Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Partners with BNI to Propel Digital Transformation in Education and Banking
YOGYAKARTA – Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) have entered into a collaborative partnership aimed at advancing digital transformation across both the education and banking sectors. This collaboration formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Cooperation Agreement (PKS), is expected to bring substantial improvements in the management of university operations and financial services, streamlining processes and offering a more integrated system.
The agreement will see the integration of BNI’s ATM and Student Card (KTM) system, a multifunctional student ID card that doubles as a payment and transaction tool. This initiative is part of UMY’s broader efforts to modernize campus operations and promote a digital-first environment for its students and faculty. By adopting this technology, UMY intends to provide a more efficient, convenient, and future-proof experience for all its stakeholders.

Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, Rector of UMY, highlighted the importance of the partnership, particularly as it ties into ongoing research on consumer behavior in the banking sector. “The shift toward digital banking is transforming how people engage with financial services, with many turning to online platforms. However, not all individuals are fully equipped to navigate this digital shift, which has also led to a rise in online banking fraud,” he said. “This collaboration will enable us to explore these changes further through research, addressing the need for greater digital literacy and understanding.”
With the growing prevalence of online banking, the collaboration also provides an opportunity to explore the impact of technological disruption on the traditional banking model. As physical bank branches become less common, both UMY and BNI aim to better understand the evolving needs of consumers and how to adapt financial services accordingly.
The partnership also includes BNI’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which will focus on community development projects in areas such as Central Java, Nusa Tenggara, South Sumatra, and the Riau Islands. UMY’s existing community engagement programs will be strengthened through this collaboration, hoping to improve access to financial services and education in these underserved regions.

Ariyanto Soewondo Geni, Regional Head of BNI Yogyakarta, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing digital transformation across sectors. “The integration of digital banking with higher education is a key move that will enhance service efficiency and modernize our approach to financial services,” he said. “Digitalization is no longer optional—it’s essential for delivering faster, more accurate, and adaptable services in today’s fast-evolving landscape.”
This partnership marks a major step in the growing synergy between the banking and education sectors, promising to deliver long-term benefits for UMY students, the local community, and beyond. By bridging the gap between education and technology, UMY and BNI are paving the way for a more digitally connected society.
