Expanding international networks continues to be a top priority for Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). This initiative not only serves as a strategy to strengthen its global reputation but also offers students and prospective graduates a broader exposure to various international institutions. In collaboration with the Indonesia-Britain Education Centre (IBEC), UMY hosted the UK Education Fair, featuring 21 universities from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Held on Tuesday, February 11, at the UMY Library Building, the event provided an opportunity for UMY’s academic community and the public to explore opportunities and extend their networks with top universities from the United Kingdom.

During the event, Fitri Arofiati, Ns., MAN., Ph.D., Head of the Office of Cooperation and International Affairs (LKI) at UMY, emphasized the significance of having globally recognized institutions in attendance. She noted that the participation of these prestigious universities not only provides UMY with a platform to forge collaborations but also enhances its international recognition. Arofiati pointed out that educational fairs go beyond being mere exhibitions, offering opportunities to strengthen networks for all universities involved, both in academic and non-academic areas.

Among the participating universities at the UK Education Fair were renowned institutions such as The University of Manchester, University of Birmingham, University of Edinburgh, and Queen’s University Belfast. The event attracted hundreds of participants, including students, faculty, and the public, such as students from Madrasah Muallimat Yogyakarta. The fair succeeded in drawing attendees who actively engaged with the representatives of various universities, eager to learn more about the opportunities available for study abroad.

Satyadhi Hendra, Director and Senior Counsellor of IBEC, expressed his hope that the UK Education Fair would serve as a bridge for students interested in pursuing graduate or doctoral studies in the United Kingdom. He further noted that the event marked an initial step for UMY in exploring potential collaborations such as joint research, double degree programs, and international faculty exchanges.

“The potential for cooperation between UMY and UK universities is immense, as many are already familiar with UMY’s reputation,” said Hendra. “We encourage UMY to engage directly with these institutions to follow up on collaboration schemes in the future. One avenue to explore could be inviting UK academics to UMY for guest lectures, providing students with invaluable insights.”

Hendra highlighted that one key factor students consider when selecting a university in Indonesia is its network of international partnerships. He believes that UMY’s growing collaboration with overseas institutions will be a major draw for prospective students. He also expressed optimism that this visit would bring substantial contributions to UMY’s faculties, further expanding the university’s global reach and academic connections.
