UMY Virtual Induction 2020

As a young and global campus in Indonesia, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) becomes where various cultures, languages, and ethnicities meet. In 2020, around 60 international students from 22 countries are accepted in UMY through UMY Scholarship Program. The students come from multiple countries such as Spain, Ecuador, Tajikistan, Gambia, Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, Pakistan, Palestine, Liberia, Bangladesh, and Zambia.

In efforts to support them adapt to the university environment, International Relations Office, UMY conducted an induction program on October 9th – 10th, 2020. Due to the pandemic situation, the induction program was carried out through online platform. A total of 170 students and staffs attended this event. The program provides international students with an introduction to the University, the Library, and their study program. They also learned about their degree program, the help and support available, and the general facilities on offer at the University.

Rector of UMY, Dr. Ir Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM. On his opening remark of the Virtual Induction 2020 at AR. Fachruddin B, 5th floor stated, “I hope that international students can develop academic awareness, familiar with the UMY’s vision and goal, and understand the curriculum”, said Gunawan.

Yordan Gunawan, Head of International Relations Office, explained why induction continues in this year, “UMY must be able to introduce all of its facilities, including academic and non-academic. Moreover, international students need to realize the UMY learning system, recognize the surrounding environment, and understand the norms that exist in Yogyakarta and Indonesia so the students can survive with all cultural diversity”.

Furthermore, the program was attended by several speakers, M. Bima Aoron Hafidz and Ridho Yulianto gave talk about the immigration procedures for international students; Tomy Waskitho explained about student mobility program; and Eko Purwanti, Ph. D. (Head of Learning Development Division) provided introduction on MyKlass UMY, the official e-learning platform in UMY.

Also, a sharing session was held to inform new students about the campus life in UMY and Yogyakarta. Hussein, Taerine, and Naseer mentioned their study experiences in cultural adaptation, course arrangement, and learning methods. They appreciated the activity because UMY scholarship and academic activities were thoroughly explained.

The Induction Day-2 ended by notifying the participants to continue Induction activities with their respective faculties. The faculties that carry out Induction include Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Language Education, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Postgraduate.

“As a study program that accepts international students, this induction program allows us where we can tell what foreign students need to prepare to come to our university.,” said Head of Nursing Study Program, Shanti Wardaningsih, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp. Kep. Jiwa.
