UMY Leaders Visit Guangxi Medical University for 90th Anniversary Celebration, Strengthen Bilateral Collaboration

NANNING, CHINA — Delegates from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) recently attended the 90th-anniversary celebration of Guangxi Medical University, a prominent institution renowned for its excellence in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy education. UMY was represented by its Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng.; Dr. Edwyn Saleh, Sp.BMM., MARS, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry; and Dr. dr. Sri Sundari, M.Kes., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The visit marked a milestone in the growing academic and research partnership between the two institutions.

Founded in 1934, Guangxi Medical University has grown from modest beginnings—a 25-bed hospital—to becoming a leading medical institution equipped with a 3,200-bed hospital in 2024. The university’s facilities, including its affiliated hospitals, have set a benchmark for innovation in medical education and patient care. During their visit, UMY delegates toured Guangxi’s dental and oral health hospital and observed the advanced simulation center at one of the university’s affiliated hospitals. These visits underscored UMY’s commitment to learning from Guangxi’s best practices in healthcare and medical training.

Prof. Gunawan expressed his gratitude to Guangxi Medical University for fostering collaboration and supporting mutual growth. “We value the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with Guangxi Medical University. The expertise and research capabilities here are exemplary, particularly in the field of dentistry,” he remarked. Dr. Edwyn Saleh emphasized the potential for deeper collaboration, citing the impressive competence of Guangxi’s researchers. “We look forward to expanding our cooperation, particularly in dental medicine, and leveraging the strengths of both institutions,” he said.

In addition to academic exchange, Prof. Gunawan highlighted the importance of sustaining partnerships across education, community service, and research. “Our hope is to cultivate a lasting relationship that benefits not just our institutions but also the broader communities we serve,” he said. The visit not only celebrated Guangxi Medical University’s historic achievements but also set the stage for future joint initiatives, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing global health and education.
