UMY and MSU-IIT Collaborate on Innovative Joint and Dual Degree Programs

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing international collaboration in higher education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) have unveiled plans to establish joint and dual degree programs. This initiative, announced during a recent coordination meeting at UMY’s E8 Conference Room, represents a significant step forward in fostering cross-border academic partnerships.

The meeting featured insights from Dr. Fitri Arofiati, Director of the Office of Cooperation and International Affairs at UMY, who emphasized the importance of careful preparation and alignment of goals in launching these new programs. “This collaboration is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen educational ties and create innovative pathways for our students,” Dr. Fitri Arofiati stated.

From October 7 to 19, UMY welcomed a delegation from MSU-IIT’s College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), including prominent figures such as Prof. Marie Joy D. Banawa, Dean of CASS, and other academic leaders. Their visit focused on discussing the framework for the proposed joint degree and dual degree offerings to enrich the educational landscape for both institutions. The proposed Joint Degree Program will offer a Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching and Studies to enhance education and research in foreign language studies. Three study programs at UMY and CASS will jointly develop this innovative curriculum, promoting interdisciplinary excellence. Meanwhile, the Dual Degree Program will cater to students interested in Arabic language education and Filipino studies, providing a unique academic pathway that combines both regions’ rich languages and cultures.

“We are excited about the potential of these programs,” said Assoc. Prof. Sittie Noffaisah B. Pasandalan of MSU-IIT. “Our collaboration aims not only to enhance our respective academic.” During discussions, the partners addressed the complexities of aligning curricula and credit systems, particularly in light of differing regulations governing higher education in Indonesia and the Philippines. The focus was on creating a cohesive framework that ensures both institutions’ academic standards are met. “We are committed to finding solutions that will allow for a smooth integration of our programs,” added Assoc. Prof. Irish Mae F. Dalona, Chairperson of the English Department at MSU-IIT.

As the academic landscape continues to evolve, UMY and MSU-IIT are poised to lead innovative educational offerings, providing students with invaluable cross-cultural learning and collaboration opportunities. Establishing these joint and dual degree programs marks a pivotal moment in international education, reinforcing the commitment of both institutions to academic excellence and global engagement.
