Signing MoU and MoA Between Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and the Central Bureau of Statistics of D.I. Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta – Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta have officially established a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). The ceremony was held in the Commission Meeting Room AR A, 5th Floor, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, and attended by leaders from both institutions as well as invited guests from the Faculty of Economics and Business, UMY. The event began with an opening speech by the Rector of UMY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng. In his remarks, Prof. Gunawan expressed his gratitude to BPS D.I. Yogyakarta for their willingness to collaborate with UMY. He also highlighted the vital role of BPS in supporting higher education, particularly in providing data for research, theses, and dissertations. “BPS is a strategic partner in enhancing academic research and student projects. We hope this collaboration will foster a productive and mutually beneficial relationship between both institutions,” said Prof. Gunawan.
Following this, the Head of BPS D.I. Yogyakarta, Ir. Herum Fajarwati, M.M., delivered her speech. She expressed her appreciation to UMY for welcoming the opportunity to explore this partnership. Herum also introduced one of BPS’s flagship programs, Pojok Statistik (Statistics Corner), aimed at increasing statistical literacy within universities. “This program is designed to provide wide-ranging access to statistical data and information, such as census data on population, agriculture, and economy. The Statistics Corner is expected to serve as a learning platform, data service center, and information dissemination hub,” Herum explained. She further emphasized the significance of academia as the primary user segment of statistical data in Indonesia. According to Herum, students, as future leaders, need to develop a strong understanding of statistics to support evidence-based policy-making. “This collaboration opens doors for future joint initiatives, which will undoubtedly benefit all parties involved,” she added.
Through the signing of the MoU and MoA, UMY and BPS D.I. Yogyakarta aim to develop various collaborative programs in the fields of statistics, research, and community service. This partnership is expected to strengthen the role of higher education institutions and government agencies in fostering a data-literate and knowledge-based society.
