Leadership Transition for Achmad Nurmandi Appointed as UMY Rector for the 2024–2028 Term
YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia – In a momentous leadership transition, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) appointed its new Rector, Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., on Monday, December 30, 2024. The inauguration ceremony, held at the Ballroom of the UMY Student Dormitory Building, marked the end of an era under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng., who served as Rector for two consecutive terms since 2016.
Over the past eight years, UMY has achieved remarkable milestones, including securing international accreditation for 24 academic programs, attaining “Superior Accreditation” for 39 programs, and boasting 43 professors. UMY is also recognized as one of only nine private universities in Yogyakarta to receive superior accreditation out of 99 institutions in the region.
During the handover ceremony, Muhammadiyah Chairman Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si., lauded UMY’s progress under Gunawan’s leadership. He emphasized the strategic vision of Muhammadiyah to position its universities as centers of excellence, contributing to global impact and academic prominence.
“UMY has established itself as a robust institution, demonstrating adaptability to global advancements while maintaining quality. However, I urge UMY not to settle for national recognition alone; Indonesia still lags globally. The progress achieved thus far should be a springboard for Muhammadiyah’s internationalization initiatives,” said Haedar.
Reflecting on his tenure, Gunawan highlighted the collective effort behind UMY’s accomplishments. “Every milestone is a testament to the collaborative work of our team. Leadership is about guiding and inspiring through action,” he stated.
In welcoming his successor, Gunawan described Nurmandi as a principled, disciplined, and highly dedicated academic leader. “Private universities are navigating significant challenges due to shifting policies, requiring strategic and innovative approaches. I am confident that Prof. Nurmandi will steer UMY toward even greater achievements,” Gunawan remarked.
