YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia – On July 15, 2024, the US Embassy’s Head of Regional Public Engagement Specialists (REPS) for Indonesia visited Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). This visit is part of an ongoing effort to monitor and assess American Spaces throughout Indonesia. It is particularly significant as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the cooperation between UMY and the US Embassy, which began in 2004.

Following the initial visit to American Corner UMY in July 2023, the Head of REPS expressed excitement about returning. This visit underscores the importance of monitoring and evaluation. “This visit is noteworthy as it commemorates our partnership’s 20th anniversary. With a connection to communities like Yogyakarta and institutions like UMY, it’s a significant milestone and one of our most notable accomplishments in supporting the US Embassy’s presence within the Indonesian community,” said the Head of REPS.

The Head of REPS further stated, “This visit for monitoring and evaluation is significant, even though we haven’t conducted a formal evaluation yet. Considering improvements at American Corner UMY over the past year, I see many renovations and improvements in the facilities. This indicates that the UMY students who volunteer here maintain the American Corner well and recruit new members to continue various programs. I am impressed by this spirit.”

In response to a question about the expansion and influence of American Corner UMY, the Head of REPS emphasized that the US Embassy needs to set specific goals for American Spaces in Indonesia or other countries. Additionally, these programs foster community building and improve interpersonal relationships among students. This type of diplomacy strengthens the relationship between the United States and Indonesia, and American Corner UMY has been crucial in achieving this.

“A dialogue between us at the US Embassy and the American Corner UMY team is key to this evaluation,” the Head of REPS said regarding plans for review. “We act as facilitators by understanding and meeting their needs. We also explore potential development areas to advance American Corner UMY. We seek improved mutual understanding between both sides.”

The visit demonstrates the US Embassy’s continued dedication to collaborating with Indonesian educational institutions to promote mutual understanding and fortify bilateral ties through programs like the American Corner.
