International Seminar on AI Innovation Marked the Starting of 18 UMY Summer School 2023

As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a driving force behind transformative solutions across industries. The possibilities presented by AI innovation are boundless. However, AI also presents significant challenges that must be navigated thoughtfully.

Therefore, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) held an International Seminar with Dr. H. Emil Elestianto Dardak, B.Bus., M.Sc., along with the opening ceremony of 18 UMY Summer School 2023 at AR Fachruddin B Building on Wednesday (14/6).

Dr. H. Emil Elestianto Dardak, B.Bus., M.Sc., Vice Governor of East Java, shared in his presentation that AI creates new challenges. “When talking about challenges in developing AI, the challenge is measuring that we have all the necessary human resources to come up with many potential solutions and how to developing tools.”

“East Java has the experience of using Belanja Inovasi (Belanova) as a way to support AI developments by young generations, also the detection of mask and COVID-19 as well. However, it is also create challenges of competing with human beings when it comes to job, that is why we need to look at it carefully.” Emil added.

In addition, Emil also thanked UMY for raising an important topic on how to be part of AI development. “I believe that summer school will be the opportunity to discuss and deliberating further on this matters.”

During the media interview, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng., Rector of UMY, explained, “The topic of this year’s UMY Summer School is AI because when it was first introduced, many people worried that it would displace them from their jobs. Hence, this year’s UMY Summer School will learn on how to implement AI in each department. They will also try to overcome challenges and discover solutions.”

UMY Summer School 2023 will be held for four months, from June – September. Thus, all the departments will not be starting at the same time due to the difficulties in organizing the available rooms and lecturers and anticipating the approximately 900 students joining from various countries. Gunawan also hoped that the advancement of AI would be useful in assisting us in completing our tasks.
