YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA – In an effort to strengthen educational ties between Taiwan and Indonesia, Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) recently hosted a presentation at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), providing insights into its renowned Mandarin language programs. The event underscored both institutions’ commitment to enhancing Mandarin proficiency and fostering deeper cultural exchange.

Dr. Te Fen Ou, Director of the Mandarin Learning Center at CYCU, led the session, detailing the breadth of language learning opportunities available at the university. “Mandarin is not just a language; it’s a bridge to understanding the rich cultural heritage of Taiwan and China,” Dr. Ou remarked. “Our programs aim to offer an immersive, comprehensive experience that allows learners to connect with the language and its cultural context truly.”

A central focus of the presentation was CYCU’s Customized Mandarin Camps, designed to meet the needs of diverse age groups and proficiency levels. The camps seamlessly blend language instruction with cultural activities such as Chinese calligraphy, cooking, and music. “Our camps are tailored to cater to each learner’s needs, whether they are just beginning their language journey or looking to refine their skills,” Dr. Ou explained. “By combining engaging cultural experiences with rigorous language training, we create a holistic educational environment.”

The session also highlighted the Cultural Immersion opportunities provided at CYCU, including local trips across Taiwan and interaction with Taiwanese student buddies, who guide international students through daily life and culture. Dr. Ou emphasized the importance of cultural exposure in language learning: “True language acquisition happens when you experience the culture firsthand. Our student buddies play a vital role in helping students adapt and thrive in Taiwan, both in and outside the classroom.”

Additionally, CYCU offers One-on-One Tutoring, which Dr. Ou described as an invaluable tool for students looking to enhance their conversational abilities, pronunciation, and overall fluency. “Personalized attention ensures that every learner receives the support they need to excel, no matter their starting point,” he said.

The presentation also covered the certification process, with Dr. Ou noting that while the courses are non-credit, students will receive certificates acknowledging their language achievements. “We want to ensure that every participant leaves with tangible evidence of their hard work and progress,” he added.

Dr. Fitri Arofiati, Director of Cooperation and International Affairs at UMY, expressed her enthusiasm for the prospects of future collaboration. “This session has opened a valuable dialogue on how we can jointly develop impactful programs that benefit our students and foster stronger ties between our institutions,” she stated. “The Taiwan Education Center at UMY will play a crucial role in bridging the gap and supporting these future initiatives.”

The session marked an important milestone in the growing partnership between UMY and CYCU, with both institutions working toward broadening educational opportunities and advancing cultural exchange. This collaboration promises to enrich the academic and cultural experiences of students in both Indonesia and Taiwan, contributing to a deeper understanding on the global stage.
