Adam Mickiewicz University Highlights Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta as Key Partner in Indonesia
Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU), one of Poland’s prestigious institutions, has named Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) as one of its most important partners in Indonesia. This was announced during a visit by AMU’s Rector, Bogumila Kaniewska, to UMY on Friday, March 7th, aimed at exploring opportunities for enhancing academic mobility and collaborative research.
During the visit, Kaniewska emphasized the critical role of internationalization for both universities. With AMU’s established reputation for excellence, she expressed confidence in building stronger ties with UMY’s faculties to foster a more intensive collaborative environment.

“I am open to answering any questions and discussing cooperation proposals from UMY, including academic programs such as summer schools and student exchanges. We are also interested in establishing collaborative research projects with UMY’s academic community,” said Kaniewska.
She further shared that during her visit to Indonesia, she had studied the country’s higher education system and mechanisms, noting that several ongoing national strategic programs could be enhanced with the involvement of universities. Among the key areas for potential collaboration with UMY, Kaniewska highlighted geology, geography, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence.
The visit, which took place at UMY’s AR Fachrudin A building, was attended not only by representatives from both universities but also by the Polish government. Marek Wozniak, the Governor of Wielkopolska, Poland, also participated, opening up opportunities for collaboration between several governmental and educational institutions in Indonesia, particularly in Yogyakarta, including UMY. Future discussions will explore the potential for internships and community service projects for UMY students in the Wielkopolska region.
Since 2017, UMY has regularly sent students to AMU for exchange programs every semester. Currently, two AMU students are also participating in an exchange program at UMY’s English Education Department.
This visit and the ensuing discussions are expected to expand cooperation between the two institutions across the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). The most immediate outcome will be research led by AMU faculty in July 2025 in Indonesia, focusing on a comparative study of the Indonesian and Polish languages.
Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., Rector of UMY, warmly welcomed the international collaboration initiative. He expressed hopes that the collaboration would lead to productive discussions involving UMY’s faculties, facilitating joint research programs similar to those UMY has already established with various international institutions.
“We have funding schemes available for our faculty to engage in educational and research activities at foreign universities, including Adam Mickiewicz University. These funding opportunities also extend to foreign faculty and professors wishing to collaborate at UMY. I believe this ongoing collaboration with AMU will continue to be fruitful,” said Nurmandi.
Looking ahead, UMY has scheduled a visit to Poland in July 2025 to follow up on the discussions and ensure that all preparations for the cooperation are in place for implementation.
