English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) offers a program for students with an interest in Teaching English. However, the uniqueness of our Curriculum-Based Competency will further equip students with competitive advantages.
In our Competency-Based Curriculum scheme the subjects taught are based on the competency needed by graduates to effectively perform their occupational tasks as teacher, researcher, linguists and English-based entrepreneurs. In order to meet the demand of the job market, we equip our students with five core competences as well as soft skills. The core competency includes ability to communicate, ability to teach and educate students effectively, ability to utilize educational technology, ability to design and conduct research and interpret data professionally.
In addition to the cores competency, students of English Education Department of UMY will also be armed with soft skills needed in their professional life. This includes communication skills, teamwork, and leadership skills and entrepreneurship skills. It is, therefore, not an exaggeration that our graduates can choose a range of diverse profession such as teachers, professionals and business person.
Another uniqueness of English Education Department of UMY lies in the integration of the language, teaching, and research skills with the ability to utilize the information technology. Thus the course given at English Education Department of UMY also covers computer and internet technology. Through the learning of innovative computer technology, students’ ability to use, apply and develop the strategies in teaching process by incorporating the web designing, e-learning, and use of other digital technology will be improved.
Finally, integrated in the scheme of Competency-Based Curriculum is the internalization of Islamic values. Hence, students are not only expected to develop proficient knowledge and skills but they can also implement sound Islamic morality in their individual, social or professional life. Together with the staff with international academic standing; interactive, engaging and enjoyable classes linking theory to practice; highly supportive environment for international students; and English language experience in an authentic context the students will enjoy the truly academic learning atmosphere.
